Lato is a town founded by the Dorians that used to be among the wealthiest settlements on Crete since the 7th century BC. The Dorians founded their fortresses on mountain ridges for better protection, so there is a splendid view on the Dikti mountains up to the sea - the Mirabelou Bay near Agios Nikolaos.
