Phaistos is the 2nd largest Minoan palace on Crete built around 1900 BC (it was damaged and restored several times). Unlike the Konossos palace, very few restauration works have been made on it, since the research in the place still continues. In 1908, the most mysterious of the Minoan objects was found there - the Phaistos Disc. The clay disc has 16 cm in perimeter, the time of its making has not been confirmed and the writing it has on both sides has not been deciphered till noawadays. The whole site has a very particular atmosphere - the wide staircase, remains of the vast palace, cypresses and tall pine trees close to the finds, wind in your hair, a splendid view on the fertile Messara Plateau, the sea and three Cretan mountain ranges (Ida in the north, Lassithi in the north-east and Kofinas in the south) - all that will make your visit of Phaistos unforgettable.
Phaistos can be found in the south of Crete near the town of Mires on a hill with a view on the Messara PLateau 15 km east of Gortys.
