The resort of Naxos - Chora

Chora or also Hora is the island capital, and at the same time one of the most beautiful towns of the Cyclades. It lies on the west coast, washed by the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea. Despite being a lively tourist destinatin, this charming place still preserves its traditional and historical character.

The main landmark and attraction of Chora is the magnificent ancient gateway of Portara on an adjacent island, that will catch your attention immediately after arriving at the port. It is no wonder then it is the town’s and the island’s landmark, although you can also see it on the postcards from other places in Greece. Yet this is not all in Naxos. Above the adorable angular snow-white houses built in the slope, there rises the Venetian castle, protecting this island of Dionysus. Like in all bigger towns, in Naxos you will also find cafés, restaurants, tavernas and shops of all kinds. Don’t forget to taste some of the typical island dishes, including cheese, the delicious potatoes grown on the island, fresh fruits and vegetables, honey, wine, and liqueurs. As a souvenir, you can buy for example hand-made clothes, jewellery, or ceramics.

Outside the capital, you can immerse yourself deeper into the island interior where you will find traditional mountain villages with a more peaceful pace of life. Chora can thus become a kind of a point of departure on your trips across the island. Or you can also visit it as a part of a nice trip from some of the surrounding resorts.

The closest beach is Agios Georgios covered with a long stretch of sand of a goldish colour, where you can refresh yourself in a bar or a taverna during sunbathing and swimming in the sea. Given its excellent conditions for summer idling but also water sports, it is very popular and so it usually is quite full during the summer.
