Rhodes weather

Rhodes is said to be sunniest of the Greek islands. In average, the sun shines 300 days in a year, and altogether, the island has more tha 3 000 hours of sunshine in a year.

Approximately in the mid-May, it stops raining, and till the mid-October, the weather is warm and dray. Night temperature rank between 20 and 25°C, while during the day, the temperature varies between 25 and 35°C. If the weather is windless, the temperature may reach even 40°C. Fortunately Rhodes is still affected by meltemi which cools the air down, and so, the climate there is nice even during the highest season in July and August.

Climate and nature on Rhodes

Rhodes isn´t called a green jewel for no reason. The island is literally flooded by nature and greenery almost everywhere.

Resorts

In the resorts, there are flowers, trees and beautiful gardens almost everywhere. You can often see splendid green lawns near the hotels, with tourists sunbathing under the shade of beautiful palm trees. Everything on the island is permanently in bloom, with lemons, orange, figs and more fruits growing on the the broad-leaved trees. The air is mostly suffused with the scent of the blooming plants, further enhancing the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere.

Wild nature

Nature on Rhodes could be divided into three parts: the middle hilly region around the Monolithos Castle, the island interior, and the southern part.

The west coast of Rhodes is very hilly (especially in the middle). You will find there the Ataviros mountains and in general, the hills are very steep, and green. At high altitude, you will see beautiful forests of large pine trees, while in low altitudes, like the are under the Monolithos Castle or near the beaches of Glyfada or Paleochora , you will find steep hills coveregd with rich green vegetation and forests. There are beautiful views as the deep green of the hills forms a contrast with the deep blue of the sea. Even if you don´t feel like going for trips to the surroundings, you should at least rent a car and visit the castles Monolithos or Kritina with splendid views on a great part of the hilly coast (and the possibility to visit the beautiful local beaches).

The southern part of Rhodes resembles more a savanna or a step. There are vast grass surfaces wit islands of trees and bushes. This part is very dry - from spring to autumn, the grass has a goldish colour, the fields have been harvested and there are straw bales lying on the ground. In this part, you will also find the unique natural region of Kalamfka and beautiful abandoned bay with amaizing sandy beaches of Saint George and Mavos Kavos.

THe central part of Rhodes consists mainly of green hills with splendid views, and broad-leaved and coniferous forests. The northern part has been built-up quite densely, while the central and southern part of the island is rather desolate, yet the beautiful nature is omnipresent. Apart from the nice views, the wooded centre of Rhodes also offers many places where you can take a rest or go for a walk as the broad-leaved forests provide cool shelters where you can hide from the hot sun. This is true especially in case of the Butterfly Valley or the Seven Springs. In the places which are not wooded, you will find beautiful little fields, gorges covered with grass, brooks and rivulets…

If you travel to Rhodes, you should definitely rent a car (for general recommendations on renting a car, see the link) and explore the island. It is definitely worth it.
