The attractive typical Greek resort of Lixouri is a very significant place on Cephalonia, being the administrative centre of the north-western tip of Paliki, and the second largest town on the island, with a stretegic position opposite the capital of Argostoli. Despite being razed to the ground after a devastating earthquake in the 1950s with very few of the original architecture being preserved, it could be restored so that it could offer to the visitors everything they expect from a summer holiday in Greece.
Depite its significance in the region and the whole island, Lixouri is a rather peaceful resort intended mainly for those yearning for undisturbed peace and relaxation in the glare of the hot sun and along the coast of the deep blue sea. It is for its very beaches covered with soft sand that the resort is popular among families with children. All-day idling, bathing and an evening sit-down in a taverna or a walk in the starlight are simply a remedy for the soul.
The best beach in the surroundings is Lepeda, located only a few kilometres away from the centre of the resort. The sand there is reddish and the entry into the water long and very gentle, therefore completely safe for less experienced swimmers and small children. To practice water sports, you ought to go to some of the other nearby beaches.
What to do in Lixouri?
On their menu, the local tavernas and restaurants offer mainly fish and seafood delicacies but also dishes made of lamb or chicken meat. If you like wine, you should definitely taste the traditional Robolla. There is no need to hurry - on the contrary, you muset enjoy the slow pace of Greek meals.
Nightlife in Lixouri is rather calm, maybe for being the target of families with children who are not really fans of hilarious entertainment. Despite that, in some bars you will encounter loud music and dance till the morning hours. The variety of goods in the shops is not the biggest either - you can only get there basic foodstuffs and daily articles, clothes, and gifts. If you still miss the advantages of a bigger town, set off to the capital of Argostoli where you will find more options of shopping and entertainment.
The surroundings offer many opportunities to go on a trip. The picturesque villages scattered all over the island will provide you with an insight into the atmosphere of Greek country. The local charming little churches and chapels are really worth visiting. The best option is to rent a car and set off also to the remote places.
